Odisha Khushi Sanitary Napkin Scheme 2021

The Odisha government has launched the Khushi Sanitary Napkin Scheme to provide sanitary pads to girls for free. Subsequently, the state government will provide sanitary napkins to all girl students studying in government / government aided schools between class 6th to 12th. Accordingly, this women's initiative is benefiting about 17 lakh girls across the state.

The Khushi scheme was first launched by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on 26 February 2018. The state government will also expand social marketing of pads for girl students in the community at subsidized rates. Accordingly, the scheme will promote health and menstrual hygiene and will also reduce the dropout rates of girls from schools. The Khushi Sanitary Napkin Scheme is a major step towards women empowerment as this scheme will lead to higher retention of adolescent girls in schools.

Key Features of Khushi Sanitary Pad Scheme

Khushi (meaning "happiness" in Odisha) is a women's health and hygiene program run by the Government of Odisha to provide free sanitary pads to girl students in Odisha. Important features and salient features of this sanitary pad distribution scheme are as follows:

  • This is a major step of the state government to help girls in menstrual hygiene and maintaining their health.
  • Accordingly, in all government / government aided schools, all the girls studying in classes VI to XII will get these sanitary napkins absolutely free.
  • Subsequently, the scheme is to benefit about 17 lakh girls in the state of Odisha.
  • Subsequently, the government will expand the scheme and distribute sanitary pads at a discounted rate to all girls and women in the community.
  • Unwanted menstruation will also reduce the number of girls leaving school.

The Khushi Sanitary Napkin Scheme is aimed at universal provision of free sanitary napkins and is a pro-women initiative. The scheme will lead to higher retention of girls in government and government aided schools and thereby promote women empowerment.

On 5 January 2021, the Odisha government launched the Khushi Yojana mobile app. This Khusi scheme app is available for download from Google Play Store. This web application will ensure that supply chain management remains hassle-free for happiness planning. With this happiness plan web application, sanitary napkins can be adequately stocked in block level warehouses. In addition, the nodal officers of the schools will be able to distribute sanitary napkin pads to the girl students smoothly.

The new Khushi Yojana mobile app will ensure that there is transparency in the supply and distribution of sanitary napkin pads. Adequate stock can be ensured at the block level with the help of this application.

Who are eligible for the happiness plan

Under the government's flagship Khushi scheme, sanitary napkins are provided free of cost to adolescent girls in all 314 blocks from class 6th to 12th and five municipal corporations in all government and government aided schools. For the year 2020-21, the government has released Rs 30 crore for the Khushi scheme, launched by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in February 2018.

The government will provide 18 free sanitary napkins to school girls. In addition, women from rural areas can get these pads at a discounted price through ASHA workers. Apart from this, Odisha government has also successfully implemented many other schemes especially for women like Mission Shakti, Mission Mamta etc.
